For the past 90 days I’ve been testing all kinds of elements of my email marketing. I’ve used email subject line “secrets” I heard about, tested various send days and times, included images, didn’t include images, used a preheader, didn’t use a preheader, used variations of the “from” name… I’ve done it all.
My data guru Christina put all of this info into a spreadsheet. I uploaded the spreadsheet to ChatGPT and asked it to analyze my data and give me answers to a series of questions.
I’m sharing this info with you for two reasons:
It’s amazing how much time I saved by using ChatGPT as my own personal data analyzer.
Some of the insights were surprising.
Think this article isn’t for you?
Even if you have no interest in email marketing data, I encourage you to keep reading. This process could be used for any data: per patient value, patient visit recall, marketing campaigns, supply orders and usage… the list goes on.
My spreadsheet included these fields:
Email Name (internal campaign name)
Subject Line
Send Date
Send Day (M, Tu, W, etc.)
Send Time
Number of Sends
Number of Opens
Open Rate as a %
Number of Clicks
Click Rate as a %
Send from Name
Note: 90 days of campaigns for me equaled 105 emails sent through Constant Contact.
I started a new chat with ChatGPT, uploaded the file and prompted,
“Please analyze the attached report of email campaign details. I want to know the best day and time for highest opens and clicks.”
Answer: Tuesday and Thursday evenings were best for Opens. Friday evenings were best for Clicks. ChatGPT even gave me an explanation why.
Next, I simply asked, “What other insights does the report show that would be helpful in future email campaigns?”
It broke down:
The top 5 subject lines by open rate with specific info about what words in the subject line were high-performing. Answer: Short, high-curiosity subject lines with urgency win. Words like “how”, “secrets”, and “steal” outperform. (Hence the subject line of this email!)
Top 5 subject lines that drive clicks. Answer: Informal and direct tones seem to drive more clicks. Be bold, personal, and slightly unexpected. Example: “Hey You, Read This”
Best send day and time combinations. Answer: Schedule awareness emails for Tuesday and Thursday evenings and schedule action emails on Monday morning or Friday evening.
It also told me on average how many emails I send per week (8) and per month (35).
Takeaway: Upload and Ask. Why not? It only takes about 4 minutes.
Thanks AI!
