The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace

One of the things on your to-do list is holiday appreciation gestures for your employees, right? This isn’t fluff, it’s building your company’s culture.

When appreciation becomes part of daily life morale improves and communication strengthens.

Motivational posters, donuts on Tuesdays, and staff lunches are great. Keep ‘em coming. But that’s fluff. It’s not real appreciation. Real appreciation is thoughtful, intentional, and consistent.

You’ve heard of the book, “The 5 Love Languages” by Gary Chapman. You might also be familiar with “The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace.” That’s what we’re talking about here.

During the PodiatryMeetings.com 2022 Podiatry Expo, we invited Dr. Paula Rivadeneira to speak on this topic. I recently re-watched the recording and was reminded of how great this content is.

Your employees don’t get warm and fuzzy from the same type of appreciation that makes you warm and fuzzy. Some want loud announcements of how great they are, some want a quiet but genuine thank you in private, some want a gift card, some want help with the tasks they are behind in.

Take the time to learn what motivates each of your team members, it’s time spent that pays off in dividends.

Morale improves. Communication improves. Retention improves. Customer service and patient experience improves. Watch your bottom line improve too.

You can’t fake culture. Your culture must say, “I see you. I value you. I notice the work you do when no one is watching.”

Turnover is expensive. Burnout is expensive.

Remember – employees don’t quit their job. They quit their boss.

Show up for your people, every day, in ways that matter to them.

P.S. – this isn’t just a holiday thing. It’s an every day thing.
