TRICKS OF THE TRADE

Our Experience for Your Use

This website was created created and co-founded by us – Sarah Breymeier and Ann Dosen.
Both of us have spent nearly ten years in the podiatry industry, attending dozens upon dozens of podiatric meetings and trade shows.

Therefore, we want to put our experience to good use!
Below are some helpful “tricks of the trade” from us to you… enjoy!

GOOD ADVICE – PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

No matter if you work in the podiatric profession as physician, vendor, or meeting organizer/planner, utilizing the tips and resources supplied below will serve you well!

Increase your Productivity and Without Getting Overwhelmed.
I read this book cover to cover in just a couple of days. It’s been a few years since I read it, but it always stands out as one that I recommend to anyone that wants to continue to achieve. Whether you own a small business (like a podiatry practice or a device company), it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the things you should be doing.
The Slight Edge provides practical/doable advice to help you set your goals and break down the activities that must take place to achieve those goals – step by step. By doing a little bit every single day, you will see big changes over time. There’s no need to do everything in one day, one week, one month, or even one year.
Do one action item every single day and the result will show itself!
-SARAH
Every day I listen to at least one podcast episode while I’m driving or working out to give me inspiration for the day. There are days when I wake up and don’t want to do a single thing other than catch up on episodes of Outlander, but after listening to one of these podcasts, I know I can take over the world! No matter what your daily life brings you, every single person on the planet will get something out of listening to these individuals.
John Maxwell Leadership Podcast – a weekly podcast from the leadership authority John Maxwell. This podcast focuses on the principles, practices, and process of becoming a transformational leader. Even if leadership is not one of your primary goals, the principles translate to any project or position you are in. I always come away with new motivation or a fresh outlook on a current project. Each episode comes with a downloadable resource to work through.
Online Marketing Made Easy with Amy Porterfield – Amy Porterfield is considered the GIANT in the online marketing space. She is so inspiring to listen to. Her episodes include expert interviews, mini execution plans, and secrets from her product and service launches; all tied together by her mission to make each episode as actionable and profitable as possible. Every episode I listen to of hers gets me thinking about the next big thing I want us to tackle. Her advice is tangible and for real life.
Rise Podcast with Rachel Hollis – hosted by the best-selling author of “Girl, Wash Your Face”, this podcast is a series of conversations with business powerhouses and personal development leaders where each episode provides listeners with tactical, valuable takeaways.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE, Quick Tips for DPMs

Relate & Retain Sarah Breymeier Many times before sit down and figure out what I want to discuss in a given month's newsletter, I decompress by watching - well, everything. From "trash" reality TV to Oscar-winning dramas, I am often surprised by the unexpected insight I extract. Last week I digested "Oppenheimer." If you're not aware of the movie, it is the story of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer - the director of the Manhattan Project (development of the atomic bomb during WWII). Don't worry - this post is NOT THAT HEAVY. After watching, I went down my usual rabbit hole [...]

CHOOSE WHAT WORKS

RETENTION & MEETING STYLES The article above details the ways in which we are most likely to retain information - with the best way being by teaching. But, we're not always in the teaching position... This should become a key consideration when you choose the meetings you attend. I've written several articles about how it makes the most sense to invest in meetings that align with your passion (i.e. if you LOVE pediatrics, then you should go to ACFAP.) Considering the Learning Pyramid from the National Training Laboratory, it's troubling to recognize that most CME events are falling into the [...]

HONING YOUR SKILLS

TEACHING DOES A DR. GOOD I've been lucky enough this summer to get away from my desk for a few hours each week and hit the golf course; and this year is particularly more enjoyable as there has been a noticeable improvement in my game compared to my first few years playing. One of the key success factors to my enhanced skill level, in my opinion, is that I have been helping teach one of my friends (a total golf beginner) some of the game's basics. It got me thinking about how, (before I injured my knee and could move [...]

CREATING YOUR PRACTICE IDENTITY; THE WAY YOU SAY IT MATTERS

I am currently listening to a book on Audible from James Clear; it's called Atomic Habits. As he provides practice advice to help anyone achieve their goals in creating new habits, or eliminating bad habits, there was one area that I found particularly interesting - IDENTITY-BASED HABITS. Here's a quoted example: “do you want a cigarette” – no I’m trying to quit. OR, No I’m not a smoker. One is a person who is a smoker and is trying to quit, the other one is not a smoker; if you identify as a smoker, you will give yourself the freedom [...]

HIDDEN TIP #2; We Didn’t Mean to Hold These Hostage

MY 10 PAGES Random reflections from what we're currently reading. (from February & March 2024 exhibitor newsletters) THE GOAL IS IRRELEVANT Right now I am technically not reading, but listening to a book with Audible called, Atomic Habits by James Clear. I am only a few chapters deep, but one topic discussed that reminded me of the way we can approach the sales process; it also gave me a flashback to a conversation I had with my boss in 2011. First, the concept I was reminded of from this book, is to stop focusing on the GOAL and instead focus [...]

HIDDEN TIP #1; We Didn’t Mean to Hold These Hostage

Since January, we have divided our standard newsletter into three publications: (1) DPMs, (2) vendors/exhibitors, (3) meeting planners & organizations. Each is different for obvious reasons, however, my hope is that you will find the articles below useful as a physician too! Check 'em out... REALITY TV REVELATIONS Noteworthy takeaways from pop culture. (from March 2024 exhibitor newsletter) RECOGNIZING YOUR A-TEAM I have my guilty pleasures, like we all do, and this weekend I binged a show on Netflix called, "Buying Beverly Hills." I'm not going to get into the premise, but the point is, one of the episodes showcased [...]

ARTICLES WORTH SHARING; AI IS AGING ME

I'm going to be blatantly honest - I am finally starting to feel old when it comes to some of the new advances in technology. Up to this point, I have either been highly active in adopting new technology, or been able to catch on faster than most with anything new that's hitting the market. I have to say, however, that all of the AI conversations are starting to overwhelm me. ARE YOU IN THE SAME BOAT? Then let's check out this article together! 7 A.I. Tips and Techniques for Novices https://www.meetingsnet.com/event-tech-virtual-meetings/7-ai-tips-and-techniques-novices Thoughts? Questions? Email Me! Sarah Breymeier: beheard@podiatrymeetings.com

ARTICLES WORTH SHARING; I VOTE “YES!” FOR FOOD TRUCKS

Two summers ago Ann and I went to the North Coast Foot & Ankle Symposium at Kent State and I saw something I had never seen at a meeting before - a food truck! Food choices are always a challenge at meetings - so I wanted to simply share my reaction to the food truck (FOOD TRUCKS ROCK!) at Kent State and share the article below: 6 Pros and Cons to Creating a Food-Truck Meal Function https://www.meetingsnet.com/event-design-ideas/29-survey-questions-reliable-event-feedback Thoughts? MEETING TRENDS; MIS IS HOT

In this month's DPM newsletter, I noted that MIS seems to be a popular scientific trend at the moment. In fact, there are 4 upcoming events focusing on this subject matter: July 19 - 20 | Rosemont, IL | 12 CE IMIFAS Cadaver Lab July 26-27 | Online | 10.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ Rearfoot-Forefoot MIS Surgical Conference September 28-29 | Chicago, IL | 16 CECH ACPPS Cadaver Lab Workshop October 11-12 | New Orleans, LA | 10 CECH AMIFAS MIS Cadaver Lab Masters Course As you're preparing your next meeting, be sure to consider if this is fleeting, [...]

PROOF WE CAN’T SATISFY THEM ALL; 50/50 SPLIT ON MEETING LIKES & DISLIKES

In last month's DPM newsletter, we provided a poll to gain a stronger understanding of the opinions of certain meeting aspects. Instead of trying to explain, I'll simply copy/paste below and provide the results. GOOD NEWS! WE HAD OVER 1,000 DPMS PARTICIPATE IN THE POLL! BAD NEWS... I was hoping for some landslide wins for one choice over the other that would help our profession recognize where we can make some changes based on these needs. Cue the sad music. Unfortunately nearly every question resulted in a split decision.... I recently read an article from MEETINGSNET.com that provided some pretty [...]

ARTICLES WORTH SHARING; MARKETING EQUALS ATTENDANCE

Achieving consistent growth in meeting attendance gets more challenging year after year. We've discussed in past newsletters the factors that play into these statistics, but knowing why doesn't change the facts. We just need to be able to adapt and make decisions based on the data. One thing that continues to surprise me, is when meetings tend to do less marketing in order to save dollars, and then are astonished when attendance is down. Well - there's a reason why marketing professionals stay in business. Meeting Marketing = Higher Attendance. Plain and Simple. So if you're looking to cut costs, [...]
